Cavegirl ÷ 3

Cavegirl Productions initially started as a theatre company with my adaptation of Sartre's No Exit, Ellipsis. Then, I decided, after doing a couple of 48 Hour Film Project films as an actor, that I could try and give heading up my own film team a try. Under the same CP umbrella, I then decided to offer primarily actors/artists discounted web design services. Next, I'm thinking of taking CP into the cat herding business...

The 48 Hour Film Project, now an international contest, was started in 2001 in Washington, DC by Mark Ruppert and Liz Langston. Filmmakers are given two days to write, shoot, soundtrack, and edit a four to seven minute film. At 7pm Friday evening, filmmakers attend a kickoff meeting where they pull their team's required genre out of a hat. Every city is also assigned a character, prop, and line of dialogue that must appear in each team's film. The films must be turned in by 7:30pm on Sunday evening to be eligible for awards.

The founders started the 48HFPs sister contest, the National Film Challenge in 2003. The NFC rules are almost exactly the same, but you are given an extra day and allowed to mail in your completed film, instead of running or breaking all known traffic laws delivering your finished movie to a central drop-off location in your city, as with 48HFP. Also, you are emailed a random genre on Friday evening, and the same required elements are assigned to all teams in a US timezone.

I was in my first 48HFP film, Ziptides, in 2002 with The McGuffin Project, who unfortunately drew the awful (and now thankfully retired) Soap Opera genre. In 2003, I was in the Fantasy genre film After Adam for the Unusual Suspects team. My apparent control-freak tendencies drove me to form my own film team for the following year's contest. I've worn a bunch of hats since: Director, Producer, Writer, and Actor. But I couldn't possibly do it all alone. Thankfully, I am lucky enough to know several ridiculously talented and patient people that have continued to brave sleep-deprivation, odd locations, long hours, elaborate costumes, and a seriously bitchy director to create some great short films and ultimately have a good time making them. We've made six films so far:

Last year, in the summer after we made The Old World, I was approached to be interviewed by a reporter from Voice of America, Brent Hurd, about a piece he was doing on the 48 Hour Film Project. He also asked for a copy of TOW to incorporate in it. Well, he's finally edited and released the piece on VOA, and TOW and I get a good chunk of air time.

"The Voice of America, which first went on the air in 1942, is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors. VOA broadcasts more than 1,000 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to an estimated worldwide audience of more than 115 million people."
